IRS Form SS-4 is used for applying for an Employer Identification Number. There are many ways to submit Form SS-4. IRS Form SS-4 online application is available. You can also make your application by mail but since printing out the form, filling out, then mailing it is a lot less convenient than online application, we suggest completing your application online.
However, unlike other IRS tools where you can handle your tax duties, applying for Employer Identification Number online doesn’t work 24/7. It has set hours of working between 7 AM to 10 PM ET Monday through Friday. If you get on the Form SS-4 Online Application outside of these hours and days, you cannot apply for EIN.

To apply for EIN online, you will need to provide your taxpayer identification number. Whether it be a Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, it can be used for applying.
Keep in mind that you must complete Form SS-4 Online Application in one sit which means you cannot save and return later. Also, if you’re inactive on the online application tool, it will shut down after 15 minutes of inactivity. The whole application can take approximately 20 to 30 minutes.
Form SS-4 Paper Application
If you’re unable to apply online or simply want to mail your application, you must file Form SS-4 on paper. We suggest making an online application as you won’t have to wait for your application to reach the IRS.
By completing your application for Employer Identification Number on paper, you will get the resources for free such as the printable and fillable Form SS-4 linked below. However, it will take the IRS significantly longer to process your application. Besides, you will wait for the USPS to take your application and arrive at the IRS. Either way, you can complete your application whether online or on paper.
