Lost your Social Security card? Get a replacement card. In most cases, your SSN should be enough but you may need to make a Social Security card replacement to fulfill your needs.

If you’re required to have a Social Security card, you can request a replacement online but not everyone is eligible for this. You can request a Social Security replacement card if it’s available in your state.

Residents of most states are eligible to get a Social Security replacement card. Only those who are living in the following states can’t get a Social Security replacement card.

  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire
  • Oklahoma
  • West Virginia

  • American Samoa
  • Guam
  • Northern Mariana Islands
  • Puerto Rico
  • U.S. Virgin Islands

Once you get to the registration page which linked to the paragraph above, you can start creating an account. Those who’ve been given an activation code via a letter can enter it to set up their accounts.

Regardless of receiving this activation code, you will need to enter a username and password. you will receive a security code to the e-mail address or mobile phone number you entered. This is a one-time security code you will receive when setting up your account.

After these are done, you can log in using your credentials set up earlier and request a Social Security account number card.

Keep in mind that requesting a replacement card from Social Security Administration is completely free. You aren’t going to pay a fee for replacing a Social Security card or when applying for a new one.

However—this isn’t related to the cost but you must apply for a new Social Security card if there have been changes. For example, if your name was changed due to marriage, you will need to request a new Social Security card rather than a replacement.
