Form W2 can be looked up online if the company you’re working at has such a system that allows employees to find their Wage and Tax Statements online.
Another option is to look up directly with tax software that your employer uses to file Forms W-2. For example, if your company uses TurboTax or H&R Block, you can find your 2021 Form W-2 online by searching with Federal Employer Identification Number and entering your credentials to verify your identity.
Many companies help their employees get their W-2 as early as possible. Here is a list of common companies that share employee Forms W-2 online.
- Circle K
- Cracker Barrel
- Pizza Hut
Search your Form W-2 by either logging into the company website with your employee account or look it up on tax software the company uses to file taxes.
When will I receive my Form W-2?
Form W-2 is the tax form that reports income paid to you and tax withheld from wages. You should be able to obtain your W-2 by mid-January but employers have until January 31 to file. Upon looking up your Form W-2 online and if you don’t see it by January 31, contact the human resources department or the payroll department, whichever department handles these tax forms and ask about your W-2.
Although employers are required to file Forms W-2 by January 31, sometimes the deadline may be missed. Since you won’t be able to file your tax return without reporting the income you earned, you need Form W-2 to file a federal income tax return.
Substitute for Form W-2
There is a substitute for Form W-2 called Form 4852 where you can fill it out yourself without waiting for your employer to issue Form W-2. This tax form comes in handy if you suspect that you will wait for weeks to get your W-2.
One downside to this tax form is that you must have your last pay stub and it can’t be filed electronically. Because it can’t be filed electronically, you must file it on paper and mail in a tax return. This is where you may need to put filing Form 4852 2021 into consideration because it may take a while to get your tax refund.
The Internal Revenue Service processes tax returns that are filed electronically a lot faster than mailed returns. While you file a 4852 to get your refund sooner, it may be the opposite. Contact your employer to get an idea of when you might receive your W-2 if you’re e-filing.
